Deny, Defend, D'Rabbanan: Autonomy, Disability and Health Justice in Talmud
Who gets access to healthcare and how? Who is an expert and how much power do we give them? What authority is worthy of our respect? In this class, we’ll ponder all these questions alongside the Rabbis of the Talmud who were wondering the same things. Talmud will be interwoven with anarchist and disability theory, which will combine with our own collective wisdom to create a new Torah of bodily autonomy.
In a time where justice can be so hard to find, let’s come together to shape our own vision of a liberated future for every body.
Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Xava De Cordova returns to the front of the classroom to teach one of her very favorite sugyes of Talmud! If you’ve ever wondered what the Rabbis had to say about the autonomy of disabled folks, the ordeal of being known or who gets to tell us what to do, this is the class for you.
Along with Talmud, as implied by the title, we'll also be discussed the state of healthcare in America and capitalism, and the contradictions in a healthcare-for-profit system, as highlighted by the Mangione assassination.

This is a text study class, where most text will be learned in the SVARA method of Talmud. Previous knowledge of this method is not necessary, as we will provide pre-class introductory materials for this method for those who need it.
Knowing your alef-bet (Hebrew alphabet) is a prerequisite. If you would like to learn your alef-bet for this class, we can help you do so.

Learning will be a mix of full group and xevruta/pair study. You will be matched with a xevruta after registration.
The last four classes will require an hour of xevruta prep beforehand. These classes are: 8/31, 9/7, 9/14 and 9/21.
This hour of prep can happen during the week between classes, or during a guided hour right before class. The guided hour will be held the hour immediately before class, from 1-2pm ET/10-11am PT. It will include a 10 minute break before class starts. You and your xevruta will decide which option works best for y'all.
More info and instruction will be sent after registration.

NOTE: For this class, there is an option to audit. This would mean that you would not get paired with a xevruta, but could come to classes/watch recordings. This is optimal for people who cannot make several of the class times, but still want access to the learning/materials. You will see the option as a separate “audit” ticket at check out.
